There are some solid gaming venues within a short distance of Sydney Airport across Mascot, Botany, Wolli Creek, Rosebery and Arncliffe. Unlike Melbourne and Brisbane airports, Sydney has a direct train connection making several Mascot venues genuinely walkable from the station without needing a taxi.
Sydney Airport has its own train stations - one at the International terminal and one at the Domestic terminal - on the T8 Airport line. Mascot station is one stop from the International terminal and two stops from the Domestic terminal, taking around 3-5 minutes. From Mascot station, several venues are within easy walking distance. Be aware that Sydney Airport stations carry a surcharge of around $14-15 on top of the standard fare, which catches many visitors off guard. For groups, a taxi directly to Mascot can work out cheaper.
Three venues are within comfortable walking distance of Mascot station. The South Sydney Graphic Arts Club is around 300m from the station, making it the closest gaming venue to the train. The Newmarket Hotel is about 700m away, and the Tennyson Hotel around 900m - both an easy flat walk. Lakes Hotel in Rosebery is about 1.5km if you want a slightly longer walk.
Mascot has the strongest cluster of venues near the airport - the South Sydney Graphic Arts Club, Newmarket Hotel and Tennyson Hotel are all within walking distance of Mascot station and a short distance from the terminal. A registered club will ask you to sign in as a visitor.
Three hotels in Botany - the Waterworks Hotel, Sir Joseph Banks Hotel and Captain Cook Hotel - are around 3-4km from the terminal, best reached by taxi or rideshare from the airport or a short ride from Mascot station.
Rowers On Cooks River in Wolli Creek is a well-known club on the banks of the Cooks River, about 3km from the terminal. Lakes Hotel in Rosebery is about 4km. The Scots Club in Arncliffe rounds out the area at around 4km from the terminal.
Sydney Airport is Australia's busiest airport and one of the oldest commercial airports in the world, with regular passenger services dating back to 1920 when it was known as Mascot Aerodrome. The airport sits on the shores of Botany Bay - planes on approach fly directly over the bay in one of the most recognisable flight paths in Australia. The airport has been at the centre of debate about a second Sydney airport for decades, with Western Sydney Airport at Badgerys Creek now under construction as a future alternative.
With the train connection, Sydney Airport is the most practical of the three major eastern seaboard airports for a gaming venue visit during a layover. Mascot station is minutes away and the South Sydney Graphic Arts Club is a short walk from there. Allow at least 2-3 hours - time for the train, the venue, and getting back through security.
