I always write honest food reviews, and 99% of the time my experiences are positive. Unfortunately, today was one of the rare exceptions.
My family and I visited The Birkenhead Tavern. We have dined here a couple of times before and have always enjoyed the food, which is why today\'s experience was so disappointing.
We arrived at around 3:30 pm, after the lunch rush. There were only about 10 - 15 people in the restaurant, most of whom were finishing their meals. My husband ordered the lamb shank, I ordered the chicken schnitzel, and my son ordered a steak cooked medium rare.
Despite the restaurant being relatively quiet, we waited almost 40 minutes for our meals to arrive. What made this even more disappointing was that there was no apology or acknowledgment of the delay.
When the food finally arrived, my son\'s steak was cooked well done instead of medium rare. Even worse, he found a hair in his meal. Finding a hair in your food is completely unacceptable and quite disgusting.
My chicken schnitzel was average, but the salad was very poor. It appeared old and wilted, with no seasoning or dressing. Some of the salad leaves had black spots on them, which was both unappetising and disappointing.
The only highlight of the meal was my husband\'s lamb shank, which he enjoyed, along with our drinks.
Overall, this was an expensive dining experience that failed to meet expectations. Between the long wait, the incorrect steak, the hair in the food, and the poor-quality salad, it was a very disappointing visit. A simple apology for the delay or acknowledgement of the issues would have gone a long way.
