A great quirky hotel, bar, and restaurant. The rooms are an ideal size with en suite and I did book a balcony room which was really cute. It is well situated on Hunter Street with a light rail stop just outside and is walking distance to the beach and other cafes and restaurants

This accommodation is hugely overpriced, dirty, old, and run down. We were in town for a wedding and paid $250/night. This is $70/night more than other MUCH nicer stays. My partner and I found the venue creepy. It honestly looks like somewhere you would go to do nasty things. We didn't even unpack and turned and left and kindly asked for a refund. The refund was denied because there was 'technically nothing wrong with the room and we offered to upgrade you'. Honestly, it was such an icky vibe, we couldn't get out of there quick enough. Don't book and be burnt like we were. Simple. Also, photos online are NOTHING like actual venue/rooms.

Great location next to Crown St light rail station. Easy walk to the beach and shops close by. The hotel is quirky but could be cleaner in the public areas. Our first room had terrible smell of drains but we were upgraded to a nicer room when we mentioned it.

Wonderful hotel at a perfect location to explore Newcastle city. My son and I stayed on our road tour from Sydney to Brisbane. Nice rooms, great bar and cool outside seating on sand - right in the city centre. I came back later with a colleague for a research project and can only recommend the super friendly staff to arrange a nice place for us to conduct our interviews.
Great place and for sure a hotel to return to next time I come to Newcastle.

Great location and reasonable price. Accommodation was clean and the floors had a huge collection of historical photos. The free chocolate pretzel was tasty. Room size was bit small, but cozy. Really liked the casting option on the TV.

The hotel is basically a pub with guest rooms. We had some quite nice food for reasonable prices while waiting for our rooms (we arrived a bit early).
Our luggage had already been brought to our room when we finished our snacks.
The room itself, however, was extremely small, even smaller than most Japanese hotel rooms we've been in so far.
Equipment is sparse, a hanger in the "floor" on the wall opposite the door, a tiny "desk" with a chair, and a bed in a niche about 2 x 3 m (that's basically the whole "bedroom".
A small cabinet in a corner held the small fridge and the base plate for the cooking kettle. The kettle itself was missing, but we got one immediately when we asked. The bed was comfortable and clean. The TV was wall mounted on an arm and hanging in front of the windows to the inner court, where the pub is. We read about the pub and the quite good parties on the weekend, so we did expect it to be noisy, but it was rather quiet for a room in a pub and we had some good night's sleep.

The location is absolutely great, directly opposite the tram - station, all bars, shops, "whateveryoulike" and all relevant touristic sights in walking distance.
If you want to spend a weekend and see the main attractions, or maybe have a beer or two in the evening, this is the place to stay.
I'd also recommend this for any event with the option to spend the night after the party.
A special thank you to all the really friendly people in the hotel/ pub, we felt really welcome.

Disliked · The bathroom was not clean.
The toilet hinges had a crust (we hope) from old cleaner, there was hair everywhere, even what looked like bloodstains on the wall in the shower, old dirt in the corners ...just as if you wipe fast, and not clean in the corners.
We thought about asking for a make up, but then decided to disinfect the toilet and wipe over the shower walls ourselves.

We stayed for a night (Great room)
Had a beautiful dinner, the chef was awesome.
Enjoyed beer's and wine.
Also a big win on the pokies made our night.
Parking wasn't a issue, we got one right outside on Crown St, the meter was out of order and the parking ranger said to us, you guys are LUCKY.....punt the name

Although parking can be a bit competitive I currently have a Disability parking permit... and certainly was LUCKY! Since we got parking right outside the hotel - and were able to stay there all weekend - for Newcastle Jazz Fest. And although room was comfortable my partner would have appreciated more detail for the Room Air Con Unit controller. And I would have appreciated a small table on BOTH sides of bed.

My friend and I had a meal on the weekend and the food was amazing. I had the swordfish and they had a lobster mac and cheese. Both were delicious and perfectly prepared. Paired with good beers and a pleasant atmosphere it was a very enjoyable lunch.

Had a lovely dinner with family and friends for a friends birthday. The food was amazing and had a great atmosphere. We also had a woman called Avalon serve us who looked after our every need and even helped us sort out a surprise birthday cake with candles.

Went to the lucky last Saturday and was very pleased with the amazing bar staff. Jack was the on-site manager and he was very accommodating and charming, he kept making sure our group was taken care of and made the experience better overall. I will definitely be returning

I was casually talking to a stranger a while back about how disappointing I find "pub" steaks because it seemed as though the meat was never cooked properly. Turned out the person I was speak to was a chef at the Lucky and he insisted I come in and try the steak frites and said it would be the best steak I've ever eaten. I took him up on the offer and it was amazing! So much in fact I've been back three times since! Thanks Aneesh for the recommendation. So delicious and flavoursome! I'm kinda addicted! Service is also incredibly friendly and welcoming!

I love the lucky, the atmosphere is fun and comfortable. Often come for drinks with friends. Came for lunch on mothers day and again was happy with services, however, $12 for the side of "greens" is quite atrocious. Approximately 10 green beans and 2 pieces of steamed spinach/box choy. That said, My other entree was delicious.

Amazing food and amazing service. We had a booking of 19 people for a bottomless brunch and it was perfect. The food was delicious and we were given a huge variety of different dishes to share (and seriously generous servings, we were all stuffed by the end). The courtyard is beautiful and vibrant. Everyone was so lovely, we will definitely be recommending to all our friends and family and will no doubt return.

Went in for drinks before the escape room with some friends and had a great experience! The tacos are amazing as well as the courtyard! All the workers were really friendly - special mention to Sascha she was our server! Will defiantly be back :)

Stopped in here on our way through to port Macquarie, great location, fantastic outdoor beer garden and they made a great Margarita. The food was delicious, my partner had the lobster Mac 'n' cheese and was very impressed. The chef was very understanding of his allergies and was very accommodating. Great atmosphere. Loved the place, the whole experience made us want to holiday in Newcastle next!

What a great hidden gem in the centre of Newcastle. Was pleasantly surprised with the standard of the room and at reasonable price. Great food downstairs and even though it is open to 2am on the Friday night we stayed at midnight the music couldn't be heard from our room. Will be staying again and strongly recommend.

Exceptional help from Amber with our booking and using my "stays" voucher. The hotel
room was fabulous with views over the courtyard dining court, complete
with lanterns and wall images. The dining experience was great. Highly recommended and great value for money. Light rail station across the road. My daughter's birthday night was a night to remember at this hotel. 5?????

What a 'Lucky' find ?. Beautiful done renovation. Very welcoming and happy staff. Our room for the night was really comfortable and clean and had everything we needed. An indulgent surprise in the on suite.......l'Occitane products ??'??. Atrium dining was relaxing and enjoyable. The menu was classy-casual a good variety to choose from. Our steaks were done as ordered ??'??. After dinner, the lounge bar is the place to finish the night. Will visit again when travelling through Newcastle.

We had the best little weekend getaway at the Lucky! The location is perfect to walk to the waterfront, cafes, restaurants, shops...anything. The courtyard is so pretty and a perfect spot to hang out for a few drinks and sample the very yummy food. And the rooms - wow! I did not expect pub accommodation to be of such high standard. Generous size rooms with ensuite, super clean, and comfortable bed. And the staff was so lovely. What more can you ask for? We'll be back!

Spent the weekend at the Lucky. What a great find. Sympathetic restoration among the faded commercial downtown which is enjoying a revival among a diverse range of cool venues and restaurants.

Nice kitchen here does great pub food, and the bar is warm, inviting and comfortable. Cocktails are great. Even the Lucky bottled wine is very good value.

Rooms are on the small side but that's to be expected from this era. They are comfortably appointed and themed to reflect the history of the location. Bathrooms were very impressive and we enjoyed a small balcony with a quality outdoor setting. The staff made our stay very comfortable and went out of their way to welcome us.

A wonderful hideaway in Newcastle. Husband and I booked a 1 night stay here to attend a friend's birthday and we almost immediately decided that this place is worth coming back to.
The room was clean and well designed, with windows overlooking the beer garden. The receptionist was welcoming and helpful, and we received a free bottle of wine for booking directly with the hotel.

Cool space ... but, like many things in Newcastle - people included - the Lucky was a better place when it was a run-down dump in the 1990s.

If you are going to charge $20 for a burger and fries it needs to be better than Hungry Jacks. The burger I got wasn't.

Nice place to watch football or catch up with friends but restaurant needs to lift its game on the basics.
