Country pub and atmosphere, adorned by old world charm. I found them to be honourable people to deal with. I had the burger last time, a pass, the fish looked fantastic, however. Nothing on the menu if you require gluten free, that's something they can fix in time.
As people are becoming more educated about it,and GF has become a growing industry for the astute owner or chef. The GF community crave something, more savoury, other than token cake or tart.

Didn't rate rooms cause we didn't stay there!!Would've liked to though if we'd had more time, just a local day trip. The barman welcomed us warmly and was very friendly.Excellent pub grub, although limited hours, but pizzas are pretty much available all day and are great.Just a note,I noticed that some of these negative reviews are quite old-please note that the Loaded Dog has recently undergone refurbishments and a change of ownership. Also, not open 7 days a week,so check first.Ample parking, open fires in the colder months, private dining and drinking areas.Cheers

Good food at reasonable prices. Everyone enjoyed their meals. Vegan, vego and gluten free options. The flavours in the Rollo burger were beautiful and everything was cooked nicely.
Good beers. The Kosciusko pale ale on tap was a hit.
Good service but we thought the older fella seemed a bit cranky. The younger fella was happy to explain menu items and was friendly.
Good area for kids out back with giant connect four game and seating. Outdoor heaters visible and would see some use in winter.
Indoor areas were cosy and typical of an older pub.
ATM on premises and gaming area.
Good facilities but only one toilet in the ladies but it's probably enough most nights.
Disabled toilet (which was out of toilet paper) and separate mens as well with shared ceiling. Baby change table outside bathrooms.
Good pub lunch with good portion sizes. Worth a stop.

Great schnitzel with chips and salad! Better than anything in Canberra and a decent price too. Good service and good range of drinks available. Good vibe and traditional pub to visit ??'??

We stopped here for lunch while travelling from the coast on a bleak winter's day. Even with fires burning, it was uncomfortably cool inside, but the food more than made up for it. The staff were lovely.

The food is very average The staff aren't very pleasant. I would probably spend a lot more time and money here but instead I choose to go elsewhere a good location poor service and food though

Wanted to stop by for a lunch feed, was greeted rudely by the bloke behind the bar. Was told bistro was closed due to staff shortage although there were plenty of people who were eating food there. Decided to go to the bathroom and leave, as we were leaving the bloke was taking other people's orders. Maybe they didn't like that I was there with my wife? I dunno but so rude.

Best burger with the lot and chips I've eaten for ages... yum ? and good live music in the beer garden out back. Great stop on way to Canberra if you want something other than the highway ??'??

Purely a financial welcome .
Very basic meals , restaurant prices with no table service , limited menu.
The owner asked us to remove our camper bus out of the huge carpark because we would leave rubbish , he then directed us to park straight across the road on the neighbours property, (very good of him , very neighbourly) so we could come spend our money in his pub.
I visited this seven years ago very warm welcoming place full of locals coming and going , good country pub food.
Shame it all changed for the Worse

Unfortunately for a small country pub, we were hoping it would be amazing, but the staff are very rude. The food was extremely average. We would love to spend our money there but from now on we will be eating in Bungendore. Overall experience there was pretty terrible.

Didn't feel welcome at all. Meals were average. The building it's self is great but that's where it ends. No camping available due to recent rain. Won't be going back ever.

Roads very bad out that way in August 2022 due to rain damage. However, food excellent and drinks ice cold. Well worth the drive so long as you go slow

Atmosphere: 5 stars
Great atmosphere even for a Tuesday night. The locals are here having a beer and there's no hesitation for a chat and a laugh with them.
I have been here on a Saturday night and it is a very nice country pub atmosphere.

Temperature: 2 stars
Cold inside... Very cold. It's August ?A fireplace in one room which doesn't heat much. I don't really think it's their fault as there are very few people inside (saving on heating?). It's countryside and we're tough! Everyone wears a jumper and jacket. Eat rocks and toughen up kiddo!

Food: 4 stars
It should be 5 stars, but you lose a star because the garlic bread was the worse I have ever had in my life for $7. Warm chewy bread, heated in a microwave. Yuk. Toast it!!!! Don't nuke it ?
The mains, however, are amazing. Top class. We had the rissoles and fish/chips. Excellent! ??'?

Staff: 4 stars
Bar person, probably the owner was very friendly and proactive. Well done. Knows his local clientele by name and has their favourite beer ready at the counter before they even walk in the door.

The lady in the restaurant making the meals seemed upset and not very friendly. A shame.

Prices: 5 stars
Very well priced. Everywhere seems to be charging a fortune for the smallest meal, but this place has kept it real. Not cheap but not expensive either. Well priced.

Overall: I would highly recommend this place. It's charming and gives a very nice country pub feel. If you are an overseas visitor, you will feel the true Aussie spirit in here. Take a moment to view the historical pictures on the walls from the wood industry in the 1920's or earlier.

Tarago was the local Aboriginal word for country, or possibly 'a place between two bodies of water'.

I didn't stay at the hotel but had dinner here. Of all places I'm happy to find a vegan option. The vegan lasagna, it took quite awhile to come to the table but I think the lasagna was really good. Would recommend

Missed lunch by 2 minutes. Were abruptly told that the kitchen is CLOSED. Had pizzas that were cold. Publican - not very welcoming at all. Won't be back. Very disappointed especially after a long drive to specifically go to a nice country pub. Will stay local.

It had a great atmosphere and old world character. The only option for eating on the day we came was pizza, which were pretty good.

The management and staff here clearly are people who like people and like dealing with people: nothing is a problem, everything is a pleasure.

It's a comfortable 19th Century pub that plays up its quaintness: the plaster has been taken off the walls to reveal the brick and stone construction; the pressed-metal ceilings are a smokey cream; there is a fire in every room in winter; and there are old photos everywhere.

In good weather there are outside tables.

Quite acceptable pub food, large servings, reasonable prices.

Tarago seems to have lost its attractiveness, but getting there is a nice drive and the Loaded Dog is a worthwhile destination in itself.

Lovely old building... But the two staff members we encountered were so unfriendly and just rude at times! When we asked what the history of the pub was we were answered 'there is none, it's just an old pub, it's got nothing to do with the loaded dog poem'. Food average. I would not recommend this pub.

Great food, reasonable prices and good service. It was a cold day and there were fires lit in all the fireplaces making it a really cosy atmosphere. Good sizes and tasty meals, we didn't have to wait long even though it was fairly busy. Friendly and helpful staff. Highly recommended.

Awesome hotel with great food. Tim is always the nicest host and the fireplaces are always going in the colder months. Great for a good meal and a sit in front of the fire.
