Had drinks & dinner here & was pleasantly surprised at how wonderful it was. Not only was everything reasonably priced, but the service & misdemeanor of the staff was exceptionally good. 2 cutlets for $20 would normally be $30+ at home & was so well cooked. The Criterion is a must visit if you're in town for a feed.

Quite a nice stay. Rooms upstairs. Commen bathroom toilet. Bed was comfy but no TV in bedroom.
TV was in the commen area upstairs, which was comfortable and non invasive.
Big tick.
The food in the pub was OK. Locals emptied out at 9pm and the place was barren. Bar closed at 9.30 pm. Very quiet.

Loved staying here for five nights last week. Busy buzzy country hotel, clean bedroom, sparten bedroom furniture, could have had a clothes set of drawers or wardrobe. Shared Bathrooms impeccably clean. Hot water ample. Coffee and Tea and Kettlle available in the lounge. Nice little balcony looking over the street. Fridge and microwave. Nice modern flat screen in the bedroom with plenty of channels. Air conditioner which worked brilliantly.Wash Basin in the room.
I ate a huge Sunday roast in the bistro, pork delicious and plenty of vegetables. Stairs to the rooms might be a problem for the less able. Great country family hotel atmosphere, fantastic murals depicting Captain Moonlight and the Great Flood of 1852 in the front and middle bars. Nothing to complain about The Criterion Hotel, in Gundagai. I recommend it, but maybe not for families due to the room size that's all.

Dined for dinner with friends whilst staying in the area. I had the crumbed lamb cutlets with chips & veges. It was great that you could get a big serve of 4 cutlets which I enjoyed.

This is a pub room, so the bathroom is shared, but what a beautiful Deco pub it is. Immaculately kept. The bed was super comfy. Air conned room with a shared veranda and kitchen. Will make this our halfway stop tween syd and Melbourne from now on. Many thanks to the staff who waited for our arrival.

The grilled chicken breast with sauce was delicious. The rump steak was quite good too, if a little over done for rare.
Prices very cheap. Very good value.

Meals review only, seems to be the best, if only option in town for dinner. Good food, really enjoyed the Thai beef salad (pictured)
The menu has good variety with standard pub options. Pizza's are the focus and the one we had was tasty. Friendly staff with patient, can do attitude.

Great country pub at the heart of the community. Friendly bar staff, full of locals enjoying themselves on a Saturday night. The satay chicken pizza was quickly eaten. The courtesy bus was a major win - and the driver was an absolute legend! Thank you

If you like the architecture of old Australian pubs you will love it. The food was good and meal sizes were what you would expect. Sadly with exception of the European gentlemen taking meal orders the rest of the staff had the personality of a door stop and seriously need to change career direction or at least get some training in customer service. Further to this the room we were allocated ( 5 ) have the annoying pleasure of the refrigeration system cycling all night long and causing the windows to rattle. Lift your game a bit now covid is sort of over. Very unlikely we will go back.

Ordered two meals of lamb cutlets at 7pm. Busy with pizza orders as State of Origin, but 7.45pm checked on order as others at table have theirs. No record of it, although I have the buzzer and swiped for payment. No offer to cook a meal , not even a plate of chips as the kitchen was preparing to close.

This hotel met all my expectations of a good country pub on a Saturday night - friendly service, vibrant atmosphere with lots of locals having a good time at their "local" and good pub food at reasonable price. The rooms and bathroom facilities (no ensuites) upstairs were well appointed and very clean. The thick walls and fully carpeted rooms and corridor made our room virtually soundproof. The shared and well appointed Common Room with outside balcony with excellent view over the main street and to hills beyond was an added bonus. Worth calling in for a drink if only to check out the evocative mural depicting the devastating flood in the 1850's. We will return when next travelling the Hume Highway.

The dining room is less than desirable, it's more like a cafeteria. HOWEVER that didn't matter when I ordered my chicken ceasar salad as it was the best ceasar I've ever had! Generous portions and generous on the protein. Absolutely yum! Would recommend to anyone passing through town.
Friendly service also.

We had lunch here the last 2 Saturdays while travelling back & forth to Wagga with our caravan. Lovely food & drinks, all reasonably priced. The lady working in the bistro was just lovely, couldn't have been more helpful.

We had dinner here on an overnight stop. We both had steak, one with salad, one with vegetables. Both meals were good and good value for money.
The painting I the public bar is definitely worth having a look at.

Reviewing the food at the pub - we stopped here for lunch on the way back to Sydney. They have a large outdoor deck which was good for the afternoon. Ordered a bruschetta and steak sandwich, the steak was extremely rubbery and I couldn't finish it. Bruschetta was fine.

We had a meal there, it was bloody good. Steak medium rear brilliantly cooked. They were under the pump with Pizza takeaway s, but it was still good service.

Very limited menu. Thought we would have simple fish and chips with salad. The highlight of what was presented was the very simple salad. The fish batter was soggy, the fish itself extremely fishy and the chips stone cold. Give this place a miss if you're passing through town. The RSL just around the corner seems to be where the locals go!

Went there for Sunday night Pizza ?. The large size (medium) is quite big and enough for 2 to share. There was lots of topping and it was very yummy. The time too cook it was quite a while though.

You can take your dogs ? onto the balcony at the back, but there is no water provided so you need to bring your own if you plan on being a while.

Loved the paintings at the bar, you can enjoy a chilled drink at the deck overlooking the hills and Morleys creek in front of ya. Would be perfect time to spend on a hot summer day. Catch some live games at the sports bar, or spend time at the bistro. The room I had was pretty good for the price, I'd definitely go back.

As far as country hotels go this ticked all the boxes. What attracted us for dinner was the large open deck at the back, don't be trapped in the small dining room. Go out the back and enjoy the view. Good food options and well priced

Every time I drive from Melbourne to Sydney or vice versa I try to get a pizza ?!

Super tasty and hearty! You will be ready for the second half of the journey. The staff is super friendly and the vibes in the pub are great. Unfortunately I cannot drink, as I have to drive. One day I will give it a go and sleep in Gundagai.

Great "go to" pub for dinner. Nice outdoor decked area. Meals are always good and they catered for gluten free. Would like to see an expanded wine list, but still OK.

Travelling through to Melbourne decided to have a rest and a bite to eat.We drove up and down the main street of Gundagai looking at the options, decide on the Criterion Hotel, wonderful building outside and inside.
My wife had the fish and chips, I the rump steak and salad with pepper sauce both were cooked to perfection, well priced. Thanks for making us welcome! ?

Great place for a meal with friendly hosts. Accomodation was simple with simple pricing. With that being said beds are in pretty bad shape and in need of being replaced. Uncomfortable sleep and only 1 pillow provided.

We went there for a quick lunch while on a family road trip. We simply chose the hotel because it was open. Once inside we were amazed by the friendly atmosphere and the gorgeous outside sitting area. The staff was exceptionally friendly and helpful. All in all we felt very welcome and immediately loved the place!

Apart from the usual pub food one would expect, we found Thai Beef Salad on the menu, which delighted the adults. One kid chose Beef Burger and the other "Creamy Carbonara Pasta" off the daily specials section.

The Beef Salads were very nice, with a perfect balance of sweet, spicy and sour flavours and just perfect for a hot summer day. I did not try the Beef Burger, but watching my kid, I know it must have been good. However, I did try the pasta and it was super delicious. Creamy, with mushrooms and a clear taste of Parmesan - very balanced, very yummy.

All in all an outstanding experience, would go back there anytime!
