It'd been a while since we'd been to the Charleston and our last memories were quite positive, so we were keen to stop in. But, we should note - that was pre-Covid.
This time round, it was an utter disappointment. The garlic bread nothing more than a cut Woolies baguette style. The chicken schnitty, which was a 'large', was the size of a small steak.
The lamb on the roast - one would think a staple and unable to go wrong - was dry and over cooked. Worse though, it was clearly cut and left on the pass to dry out even further. A swig or 3 of our drink was required to stop the coughing and get it down.
Vegetables on both meals ranged from over boiled and tasteless to not cooked at all. The roast potatoes were clearly not parboiled and were still uncooked in the middle.
Gravy on both meals resembled pudding.
In terms of the space, the chairs and tables are clearly dated and stained and in need of a revamp.
It's a pity. With so many pubs in the area either doing traditional pub fare better or are changing it up with more seasonal menus.
Unfortunately for the Charleston, it looks like it'll be a while before we return again.
