The only redeeming feature of this hotel is the location on the river. Six of us had just stayed at three other country pubs over the previously five days, they all got five stars.
The Royal has great bones and with with some TLC it would be a a destination hotel. It is clearly unloved, motorcycle parking around the back is on loose gravel, with lots of old rubbish that wouldn't take too much to clean up.
Grumpy manager and a nice English backpacker employee took our $90/room. The one redeeming feature of my room was it had air conditioning and four hooks to hang gear, there were no power points! Just as well I had a charged power pack for all of the essential USB devices. Pity if you needed to hook up a CPAP or any other device. The lounge has a couch that was spewing stuffing, most other furnishing with some work would look great, but they were knocked about. The showers were ok but both had floppy mixing taps, someone just doesn't care.
The verandah with the beautiful view of the river could be fantastic but... Obviously a few had had lunch up there on the crowded filthy tables, at 5pm the birds were enjoying the scraps off the plates and off the floor. Everywhere else on the deck was grubby, years of no cleaning
We ate at the RSL it was roast night, excellent food and very friendly staff. It was going to be pizza but it was closed until Tuesday.
