A friend and I went to the Opera House and afterwards decided to sit and have a drink/chat at this venue on the 5/3/23. I'd walked past many times and it always seemed to have a casual, relaxing vibe.
Our experience here, however, left a lot to be desired. First of all, for a pub in the city, they don't serve cocktails past 8:30pm, and they close ridiculously early. Second, there was only one bar staff member that was actually welcoming, and he was the one that actually served me - the other one that I initially encountered pretty much sneered at me and proceeded to serve some girl before me, even though I was first in line. The same guy later harassed the security guard multiple times and ordered him to kick us out 5min before closing time while we were enjoying our catch up over wine (the only thing they were serving other than beer, apparently). We'd only been in the pub for about half an hour.
The security guard himself was far more friendly than the staff, and that says a lot. We also noticed that the same particular staff member who was rude to me earlier wasn't pressuring the security guard to harass or kick anyone else out early, only us.
Absolutely unnecessary and rather discriminatory way to treat customers, and I suspect it had something to do with the fact that my friend is from Africa, as there were two other groups that were behaving rather unruly; one group in particular sitting behind us was a group of English men, openly discussing how cool it was to take drugs all night. Neither one of those groups were approached or asked to leave like we were.
